Nas the “Illmatic” MC – Full Documentary and Tracks

Nas recently released his latest studio album, “Life is Good” and I wanted to share this VH1 Beyond the Music documentary  on the legendary Hip Hop artist. For many younger people in the Hip Hop community, Nas’ legendary status and history is not as well known as I believe it should be. I grew up heavily influenced by Nas. I can still remember the summer when I was 11 years old, hearing about Nas for the first time via his hit single “If I Ruled the World (Imagine That)”. Once I heard this track with the hook provided by Lauryn Hill, I instantly became a fan. I grabbed his “It Was Written” album and was totally engrossed by the imaginative intro track with Nas rebelling against his slave masters and starting a slave rebellion. The songs on this album like, “NY State of Mind”, “I Gave You Power” and “Black Girl Lost” all spoke to my desire to better understand the world around me. These tracks were critical analyses of life in the inner city with incredibly vivid lyrics, stories and themes that have all continued to enhance my understanding of my community.

I impatiently waited for his other albums as I progressed through middle school and high school. My friends and I collected all of his albums like, “I Am”, “Nastradamus”, “Stillmatic”and others. However, It wasn’t until late in my high school years that I finally became hip to his first and most prolific album “Illmatic”, when my older cousin sat me down and made me listen to it. My Hip Hop world was totally rocked by this album that played through so beautifully. I know that for many Hip Hop purists, Illmatic is still regarded as a top five album of all time and I agree. Nas’ career has in many ways been haunted by the success of Illmatic because for many critics and fans, Nas was never able to recapture the critical acclaim of this album. I beg to differ with these criticisms of his career and work though. I believe that Nas has continued to produce albums and tracks that have continued to inspire, challenge and educate fans. I am a huge fan of Nas’ Untitled (N*gger) album for its critical discussion about Black life in America.

Well, HHD family I think this documentary will help us all truly put as Nas and his career in proper perspective. He has battle with Jay-z, the record Industry, society and himself throughout the years but there is no doubt about it, Nas has and will always be, Illmatic! There is a link to the full episode of the Behind the Music: Nas is posted above along with a number of other Nas tracks that I love posted below! Hope you all enjoy and as always feel free to comment and share!
